A behind-the-scenes effort to fire Coastal Commission Executive Director Charles Lester is being led by Governor Brown appointees, including our Coastal Commissioner, Martha McClure, who in 2015, had the worst voting record on the Commission, with only 32% of votes cast to protect coastal resources.
In its 40th year, the California Coastal Act is a pillar of environmental protection recognized around the world. In Dr. Lester's five years as Executive Director, he as a long list of accomplishments, including new authority from the state legislature to fine landowners who block coastal access. The attempt to fire Executive Director Lester is an effort by pro-development interests to undermine the effectiveness of the California Coastal Act and the independence of the Commission staff.
